he brain child of creative comms consultancy Cut The Bull, “Sunday Roast” had gymgoers roasted both verbally and physically for 45 minutes straight every Sunday lunchtime throughout September, burning calories in the most hilarious and hottest way possible.
Research suggests that laughter not only increases the heart rate and calorie expenditure by up to 20%, but 15 minutes of laughter alone can burn up to 40 calories. The circuit-style class combined HIIT training with continued bouts of laughter and extreme temperatures – meaning even more calories burnt.
After a five-minute warm-up and ten minutes of pulse raising exercise, participants put on a sauna suit for a 30-minute, extra high intensity, circuit sweat-fest. All as the class clown - resident 99 Comedy Club MC Tom Webb - cherry picks participants to roast personally (courtesy of a personal questionnaire filled out ahead of the class by each participant).
The class was oversubscribed by 260% making it GYMBOX’s most successful class launch to date, with members demanding it become a regular feature on the class timetable across the chain’s ten sites.
Rory McEntee, Creative Director at GYMBOX, said: “We’re known for putting on creative classes but throwing a comedian into the mix is certainly the most unique one to date. Let’s face it, we all need a laugh after the sh*tshow we’ve been through over the last 18 months. Members have loved it and have asked to keep it on the class timetable so we’re looking at options to make it a regular feature in more clubs.
Kudos to Cut The Bull for coming up with “Sunday Roast”. The brief went out to a fair few creative agencies but these guys nailed it. And hey, the proof’s in the (Yorkshire) pudding - the waitlist was oversubscribed by 260% so it’s been the most successful new class launch to date, with all classes booked up quicker than a delayed Glastonbury festival.”
Tom Webb, Resident 99 Comedy Club MC, said: “It’s great to be working with GYMBOX on their Sunday Roast class, as you can imagine, the last couple of years have not been the busiest for us comedians, so it’s great to get back out there doing what I love most.”
Cut The Bull said: “We always aim for ideas that have an impact but as our name suggests we don’t just want to make headlines, we want to impact brands’ bottom lines too. So, the fact that “Sunday Roast” is GYMBOX’s most successful class and in such high demand is testament to that. And importantly, working on it has been a real laugh.”
